What is Do What You Want?

Do What You Want – or DWYW for short – is a new DIY fundraising program that enables volunteers to support St. Baldrick’s Foundation in ways other than head shaving! Four unique categories encourage our volunteers to get creative and think outside the barber cape: Athletic/Game, Party/Celebration, Sales/Give-Back and Other. Not sure where your idea fits? Drop us a line at DWYWHelp@StBaldricks.org and we can help find the perfect DWYW idea for you!

Why did St. Baldrick’s start Do What You Want?

Head-shaving might not be for everyone – and it doesn’t have to be! The St. Baldrick’s Foundation wanted to give volunteers an additional fundraising program that enables them to help conquer childhood cancer in any way they’d like!

Can I still shave my head?

Our signature head-shaving events aren’t going anywhere; the DWYW program was simply created as an additional fundraising opportunity! With the introduction of this new program, volunteers have the option to sign up for a DWYW fundraiser, register to shave their head, or even sign up for both!

What kind of activities can I do for Do What You Want?

It begins with the idea – dream up a creative fundraiser as unique as you are! Want to swim a 500-meter relay? Do it. Think you can beat your friends in a hula hoop contest? We think you can, too! Whether giving up your birthday, planning a bake sale, or organizing a pancake breakfast, the sky is the limit for creating a DWYW fundraiser.

Can I really do anything I want? Even juggle knives?

While the idea of DWYW is for volunteers to be able to truly do whatever fundraiser they want, St. Baldrick’s does not condone dangerous activities; we don’t want to see our volunteers get injured in any way. Unless you are a professional, juggling knives might be a little too close to the danger zone, and will probably not be allowed. If you’re unsure about whether your idea will be approved, feel free to ask us.

What about livestreaming? I want to do a fundraising charity stream for St.Baldrick’s, how do I start?

You’re in luck! We have a brand-new option with Tiltify and a toolkit with resources to help your stream be successful! When you visit the “Do What You Want” homepage, click “Livestream” and “Start Your Fundraiser” which will bring you to Tiltify, or simply visit: https://tiltify.com/stbaldricks. Both the toolkit and donate button can be found there.

The funds raised through this platform will go to the St. Baldrick’s general fund, but through the Tiltify site, so you can track donations and engage with your donors in a whole new way! And thanking them is a breeze with a dedicated St. Baldrick’s staff member sending out receipts within a week of the donation posting.

How do I raise money with a Do What You Want Fundraiser?

DWYW fundraisers have a webpage just like head-shaving participants, so you can collect donations before, during, and after your unique fundraiser. You’ll also be able to monitor all donations that come in and thank your donors via the tools available in your Member’s Area.

What happens to the money I raise?

The money raised through DWYW is no different than money raised through head-shaving events: it all funds lifesaving childhood cancer research. Since 2005, St. Baldrick’s has awarded more than $314 million to support lifesaving research, making the St. Baldrick’s Foundation the largest non-government funder of childhood cancer research grants. St. Baldrick’s funds are granted to some of the most brilliant childhood cancer research experts in the world – including the first Pediatric Cancer Dream Team – and to younger professionals who will be the experts of tomorrow. Funds awarded also enable hundreds of local institutions to participate in national pediatric cancer clinical trials, and the new International Scholar grants train researchers working in developing countries. You can learn more about our grants by visiting our Grants page.

How do I turn in cash/check donations?

You can make checks payable to “St. Baldrick’s Foundation” and be sure to write your fundraiser ID# in the memo line so it can be allocated to your personal fundraiser page. Then, mail your check to the address below:

1333 South Mayflower Avenue, Suite 400 Monrovia, CA 91016 USA

If you have cash, please don’t mail it in! Instead, follow this process for turning in your cash donations:

  1. Log in with your username and password. Click on the gift box icon at the top of the page. Click on the green button on the page that says “Add a Cash Donation”.
  2. You will now be on a page called “Add a Cash Donation.” Fill out the form. As you add donations, a list will be created of “Pending Cash Donations.” Remember, you are making this donation on behalf of someone else, so put their name and address in these fields, rather than your own. Once you have filled out this information, click on “Save and Add Another” to add another donation gift to the form.
  3. When you are finished entering your donor information, you need to process the donations with your credit card. Click on “Pay for all” (or “Pay for selected” to process only certain gifts) and a pop-up box will appear for you to enter your credit card information and submit. Remember, until you pay for the donations with your credit card they will not appear on your website. If you’re having trouble, don’t hesitate to reach out to us at DWYWHelp@StBaldricks.org.

How long does it take for cash/check donations to show up on my fundraiser page?

If you follow the process for submitting cash donations as detailed above, your cash donations will appear on your fundraiser page immediately! Pretty cool, huh? As for donations made by check, they’ll be posted on the website approximately two weeks after we receive them in the mail. We appreciate your patience and please remember, we’re processing millions of dollars in just a few short months. If you know you’ve sent in your proceeds and too much time has passed, please call 888.899.BALD (2253).

I started a fundraiser on Facebook. Why aren’t those donations on my Do What You Want fundraiser page?

If you created a Facebook Fundraiser directly on the Facebook site, donations received will go to the St. Baldrick’s general donation fund. If you would like donations to count towards your fundraising goal, please visit your St. Baldrick’s dashboard and create a Facebook Fundraiser from there. If you need help getting your St. Baldrick’s Facebook Fundraiser set up, reach out to Fundraising@StBaldricks.org. If you have questions about your donations, please email DonationQuestions@StBaldricks.org.

Can I have a DWYW fundraiser and participate in a head-shaving event?

Of course, and many of our volunteers do just that! Please keep in mind that if you choose to have both a DWYW and participate in an event, you will need a separate page for each. If you’re part of a team for the head-shaving event, you can even connect your DWYW to the Team Page. That way, any funds you’ve raised with your DWYW can be included on your in the Team’s total and in the total for the head-shaving event that you’re participating in. If you need some help setting up your pages or connecting your DWYW to a Team page, drop us a line at DWYWHelp@StBaldricks.org.

Is the DWYW program for those who are shaving without an event?

Not quite! The DWYW program is for everyone not shaving or participating in an event. If you’re volunteering at an event, shaving at an event, or shaving on your own, you will need a Participant page or a Virtual Shavee page, not a Do What You Want Fundraiser. If you’re new to the Foundation, we know it might be a little confusing at first. To help, here’s a brief rundown of the three main types of involvement that we have at St. Baldrick’s…

  • Head Shaving Events (Our most popular type of involvement; many people shave or volunteer at these events.)
  • Do What You Want Fundraisers (DIY approach to fundraising for everyone who doesn’t want to shave or volunteer at an event. People have gaming tournaments, donate their birthdays, and run marathons, just to name a few ideas!)
  • Virtual Shavees (For people who’d like to shave without an event, at their own convenience.)

If you’re not sure where you fit, no worries! Send us an email at DWYWHelp@StBaldricks.org and we’ll work together to come up with the perfect fundraiser just for you.

What if I want to cut and donate my hair?

Then a Do What You Want Fundraiser is perfect for you! Although our Shavees need to register a Shavee page, the DWYW platform is perfect for those cutting and donating their hair because they’re not technically shaving. Please keep in mind, however, that St. Baldrick’s does not accept hair donations! Many of our volunteers have a DWYW Fundraiser page for cutting their hair and then send their hair donation to a different organization – what’s better than helping two organizations at once? If you’re looking for more info on charities that accept donated hair, check out our blog post on How to Donate Your Hair or email us at DWYWHelp@StBaldricks.org.

Can I have my DWYW funds funneled into my Shavee/Volunteer page?

While we’re unable to funnel DWYW donations into an individual Shavee/Volunteer page, we can connect your DWYW page to a Team page or an Event page. That way, all funds raised by your DWYW will be included in the Team’s total and the head-shaving event’s total, and the DWYW title will also be listed on the Event page for recognition. Please keep in mind that we are able to do this only if your DWYW takes place in the same calendar year as the head-shaving event. For example, if the head shaving event takes place in 2017, your DWYW needs to take place in 2017 for us to be able to connect them. If you were part of a team for a head-shaving event and the team needs more donations to reach their goal, having a post-event DWYW Fundraiser is the perfect way to get there! Check out this blog to find out how to connect your DWYW to a Team or Event page or email us at DWYWHelp@StBaldricks.org.

Are any supplies provided from St. Baldrick’s for my DWYW?

Yes! We offer the same promotional materials that our head shaving events use. If you are new to the program, ask your program specialist for a copy of our supplies catalog, which are available to you at no cost.

Where can I find resources to plan my DWYW?

Once you’ve signed up for a DWYW Fundraiser, you will have access to our Resource Lounge, which lives in the member’s area of our website. There are several tools available to you to help maximize your efforts!
